Episode 57: Cathy Gale Era |

|
Production completed: 7 June 1963 Emir Abdulla Akaba arrives in London for a medical checkup. Trouble is, not only does he have a body that is about to self-destruct, he also has a staff ready to make sure it happens—soon. But even with Steed posing as a chef and Cathy as the Emir's social planner, he still winds up dead. The question is, who—and what—killed him? The doctor, his aide, drugs or poison mushrooms?
A bit slow, a bit uneven, a bit dull. Well, they can't all be four-bowlers. Hats off, though, to a fine visual effect as Steed climbs the side of a tall building. And apparently Steed can cook with the best, as he prepares a delectable pheasant dish—and the reason Emir died a happy man. Quite a blooper in one scene as a camera does a pedestal (rises up) too close to a table, snags it and almost tips it over!
According to Television's Greatest Hits, this was the top-rated episode for this year, and ranked fifth of all Avengers episodes according to viewer ratings at the time it aired. See what the other top-rated episodes were. Some scenes were pre-recorded on 6 June 1963 in advance of the main recording.
Steed pokes fun at the hotel's help, who is reading a gossip magazine. "She only started to develop when she took up weight lifting."
