THE SECRETS BROKER

Cathy attends a séance
Steed tastes wine to discover the secret at the bottom of the barrel

Production completed: 19 October 1963
UK Premiere (London, Season 3): 1 February 1964
US Premiere (A&E cable): ca. 28 March 1991

When one of Steed's colleagues is found dead, he pays particular attention to the wine shop near where it happened. In addition to some excellent vintages, Steed finds a darkroom hidden in a wine casket. Meantime, Cathy has her eye on an electronics firm working on a top secret project for the government that is of interest to you-know-who.

 IMHO

There are elements of this episode that are quite appealing—any time Steed is involved with wine merchants and the like, there is always some clever banter. But other aspects of the storyline, such as the illicit love affair, tend to slow the pace and push the episode out of spy fantasyland and into more generic TV.

 Trivia

Some scenes were pre-recorded on 18 October 1963 in advance of the main recording.
