A Surfeit of H2O
By Rodney Marshall

This is one of those rare occasions where I have changed my mind completely after subsequent viewings. I didn't much enjoy it first time around, but while I still feel that both Eli and Jonah push the term "eccentric" to its absolute limits, nevertheless the episode has real charm, some sparkling dialogue and the interesting deadly mastermind has an equally memorable sidekick.

The shapes left in the flood-field from the bodies remind Steed of cakes his auntie used to make which most be one of the most surreal observations in any Avengers script. Mrs. Peel gets to wear an interesting range of 60s outfits and her Minimoke vehicle suits the overall oddness of the episode. Add into the mix Steed's speeches about wine, cows et al and Diana Rigg's fabulous acting from under the wine press and what one is left with is a wonderfully eccentric hour, quite unlike anything else. If every Avengers episode is "unique," this one is more unique than any other! Why was Colin Finbow never asked to contribute another script?
