The Murder Market
By Rodney Marshall

This episode really captures the spirit of the mid-60s. The scene in the photographer's studio where Steed adds the finishing touch (his bowler) to the model is absolutely perfect. As is usually the case in The Avengers, the funeral scene works well and is prefaced by one of the Rigg era's most memorable moments: Mrs. Peel reeling by her coffin after quaffing a bottle of champagne.

Patrick Cargill is fantastic as the camp, snobbish director of an upmarket dating agency. (His performance as a villain in the colour season is disappointing in comparison). His reaction to Mrs. Peel's request for a partner with 'stamina' is an absolute delight. He is certainly one of the most memorable villains in the series.

Despite the lack of exterior scenes (like another of my favourites, "Dial a Deadly Number") it captures the true essence of the Rigg era: a perfect balance between drama and suspense on the one hand, and style and humour on the other.
