Episode 20: The New Avengers |

Spy versus spy. Steed follows the Unicorn, one of the deadliest enemy agents known, to his home in France and corners him. In an attempt to do away with Steed, one of the Unicorn's snipers zeros in on Steed's head—and kills the Unicorn by mistake (all done with mirrors). Fearing open warfare, Steed maintains the illusion that the Unicorn is still alive until the gang kidnaps a Prince, forcing Steed to make an exchange. Things are further complicated when the gang announces they have strapped explosives to the Prince, with the intent to set them off at the first sign of trouble!
Not too awful—probably the best of the French lot. But that's not saying much. In truth, it is terribly plodding and overloaded with "chicka-chicka-bow-wow" music, plus a goofy (and I mean bad-goofy) vehicle chase in the streets of Paris. Good to see Gerald Sim, though.
Director Ray Austin, by the way, was the stunt arranger for the Emma Peel era, and made a credited appearance in "The Gravediggers."
To ensure the Unicorn's safe capture, Steed asks Gambit to turn over his gun. And then his gun. And then his gun. And then... his gun. There were even a few strains of "classic Avengers" music in this little scene.
Steed: "The Unicorn... He's just a teeny bit dead."
