Episode 45: Cathy Gale Era |

|
Production completed: 31 January 1963 A scientist's lab was broken into, but nothing was taken—at least, that's what the outside world thinks. Steed has it on good authority that samples of a deadly new viral strain were removed, so Cathy brushes up on her biochemistry to help prevent an epidemic.
Sadly this episode has become unsettlingly topical. Although somewhat mundane around the edges, it is occasionally quite chilling due to some of its uncanny realism: the victims of the virus do not die a quick, dramatic death where their flesh is eaten away or their heads explode; they die slowly, with acute flu-like symptoms. (How on Earth could Martin Woodhouse have known about Anthrax?) Thankfully we are spared a realism overdose by Redfern (Peter Arne), a fourth-season-style diabolical mastermind.
Owing to the bizarre UK broadcasting order, Peter Arne appears in two episodes in a row (playing Redfern in this one and Cosmo Gallion in "Warlock"), whereas they were the 5th and 19th episodes to be produced. *This unofficial subtitle is by Yours Truly.
Stuck at Steed's apartment because hers is being refurbished, Cathy attempts to reconstruct a valuable vase, warning Steed to keep his distance. Although we can see what's coming a half-mile away, the outcome is worth the price of admission.
