The See-Through Man This is as daft as the Rigg colour series gets (thankfully) and it is an episode which firmly belongs in the Tara King era. Whereas "The Hidden Tiger" and "The Correct Way to Kill" manage to be OTT in an amusing way, while still preserving a dramatic edge, "The See-Through Man" is simply vacuous. If The Avengers had been a situation comedy then fair enough, but Quilby and his exploding laboratory and Brodny's quite ridiculous ambassador character send this one into the genre of farce. My father recalls Warren Mitchell on the set of the Honor Blackman episode "The Golden Fleece" constantly coming up with ideas to "improve" the script, ideas which usually involved more close-ups of himself. In Philip Levene's uncharacteristically silly script Mitchell must have been in his element as he is allowed to display his full range of mad expressions and his equally silly Russian accent. The tag scene, in which Steed's Rolls Royce drives itself out through the lodge arch, just about sums it all up. |
