The Thirteenth Hole
By Rodney Marshall

Like the game of golf itself, this episode moves at a leisurely pace and the plot is threadbare. Nevertheless, it offers a humorous, clever dig at the snobbish nature of private golf clubs. (Brian Clemens' treatment would have been far more heavy-handed than Williamson's.) I particularly like Mrs. Peel's Queen Victoria pose when the male chauvinist club captain offers to give her "a stroke or two, on or off the course."

Steed's eccentric golf attire and measuring equipment are amusing, as is the look on Dr. Adams' face as he awaits the explosion on the 12th green. We are also introduced to two of the best lethal weapons in the series: the golf ball gun (which leaves a lasting impression) and a "303 club," useful for those longer shots. As Steed observes, it is "guaranteed to put a hole in one every time."

This has one of my favourite tag scenes, prefaced by Steed asking Mrs. Peel what her handicap is (a pair of handcuffs). I for one wouldn't argue with his philosophy that the correct wrist action is better served uncorking a bottle of champagne than teeing off. An enjoyable episode, though by no means a four bowler one.
