Target!

I've always thought it unfair to malign all of the New Avengers episodes. Yes, as a concept it has plenty of faults: it lacks the Swinging Sixties cultural context where style and humour were more important than action and violence; as soon as the filming moves to France and Canada it loses much of its Englishness too. However, the first 13 included some cracking episodes and this is one of them. Despite the rushed opening, the plot is clever and the target range set is atmospheric and very Avengers. Steed is not relegated to the role of father figure/gigolo as he regrettably is in some of the others. It is short on humour—a common fault of the series—but in every other respect it is first class. Had they all been as good as this one...
