by Pete Stampede Barrel-shaped and usually playing characters prone to grumbling, George Merritt dated right back to some of the earliest British talkies in the 30's. He was regularly in "quota quickies," also getting to work with the likes of Max Miller, George Formby and the Crazy Gang in slightly higher-budgeted comedy outings. He could be spotted in Q Planes (1939), in which Ralph Richardson's performance as a deceptively flippant, umbrella-carrying agent is acknowledged by Patrick Macnee as an influence on Steed. In his eighties, Merritt again played a butler in The Persuaders, "Read and Destroy" (1971). Born circa 1890, he died in 1977, having appeared in over 75 films. |
