Andrew Keir

Crawley, The Fear Merchants
Colonel James, Get-A-Way!

by Pete Stampede

Scottish actor Andrew Keir gave probably the best screen rendering of Nigel Kneale's scientist hero Professor Quatermass in Hammer's film version of Quatermass and the Pit (1967). One of his last works was playing Quatermass again on radio, and he also appeared for the House of Horror several times, notably making a good substitute for Peter Cushing as a no-nonsense monk who takes on Dracula, Prince of Darkness (1965). I seem to be the only person who remembers a mid-80's BBC Scotland series called Murder Not Proven, in which Keir hosted re-enactments of unsolved cases (the title is a legal finding unique to Scottish law). He was in the background of several movie epics, including Cleopatra, Lord Jim and not long before his death, Rob Roy.
