Jimmy Jewel

Maxie Martin, Look - (stop me if you've heard this one) But There Were These Two Fellers...

by Pete Stampede

Being a real life veteran of music hall, Jimmy Jewel was perfectly cast as Maxie. As Jewel and Warriss, he made up a highly successful double act with cousin Ben Warriss in the 40's and 50's, and at the time this episode was made he'd just started to team up with raucous comedienne Hylda Baker for Nearest and Dearest, a sitcom which ran well into the 70's. Guest appearances included Jokers Wild and One Foot In The Grave. On the "legit" stage, he was well cast in both Trevor Griffiths' Comedians, as a retired comic coaching young hopefuls, and in the West End version of Neil Simon's The Sunshine Boys. He died in 1996.
