Steed spars with an old opponent
Cathy protects a young concert pianist

Production completed: 26 April 1963
UK Premiere (London, Season 3): 7 March 1964
US Premiere (A&E cable): ca. 4 April 1991

Straightforward Sleuthing (click to see category list)A visiting Russian piano player is not having the best of times. First, a young woman is found dead in his hotel room. Next, he is seen exiting a strip joint with a certain British secret agent. And then he is blackmailed into shooting a delegate at a recital. In order to straighten it all out, Steed must cooperate with the enemy.

 IMHO

The first episode produced in the third season provides glimpses of the greatness to come, including those charming little touches such as Steed swapping hats with the enemy agent with whom he had been cooperating. Although this season has its share of duds, it is overall far more solid than the previous, offering proof that the production team was homing in on the right formula.

 Trivia

This is one of those rare episodes where Cathy is captured and restrained—something that was almost commonplace in the Emma Peel era.

Nigel Stock appeared in the Police Surgeon episode, "Wilful Neglect."

Dorinda Stevens (Darleen) was once married to Peter Wyngarde.

"Junia" is Steed's dog.

Studio paperwork for this episode identifies it as "Project 3601."

 Best Scene

In what constitutes a "tag scene" for this episode, Steed and Zalenko trade hats.

 Best Line

Steed: "What were you trying to do to your 'friend'?" Zalenko: "Disjoint his left arm from its socket over my right shoulder." Steed: "And where did you learn that particular piece of nastiness?" Zalenko: "Saturday afternoon British television, last time I was here. You should watch."
