HELP!

How do I download a file?

NOTE  Even though it is theoretically impossible to infect a screen saver or image file with a virus, please practice "safe hex" and scan all downloaded files for viruses before installing/using them.

To download any of the files, simply click on the linked title of the file. You may be warned by your browser that there is a potential risk of viruses, etc., which is perfectly normal. Then you may be asked if you want to open the file or save the file. Choose Save, then pick a convenient location, such as C:\Temp or even your Desktop.

Most of the files that are provided for downloading are zipped. That means they have been compressed so that they are smaller than they would normally be.

In order to install/use the file, it must first be unzipped. You may already have a compression/decompression utility installed on your PC (Windows 98 has a built-in utility). You can verify this if you see the downloaded file icon appear as a folder in a C-clamp or a folder with a zipper.

If the file icon appears as a default file, you will need to install a decompression utility. You can download one of the zip shareware/trial programs, WinZip or PKZip. Follow the instructions to install the utility, then verify it is configured correctly by checking the file icon again. You may need to reboot.

When you are prepared to unzip the file, use Windows Explorer to find it, then simply double-click on it. Follow the instructions to decompress the file.

You may find that you now have several files instead of one. Sometimes there will be a readme file (usually called readme.txt). Double-click on this file and read the instructions.

You may also find that some items, such as the screensavers and themes, need to be installed. To install them, check the readme file for instructions or see below.

How do I install screen savers and wallpaper?

Using screensavers and wallpaper is very easy. Simply move the decompressed files from the folder where you decompressed them into the Windows folder. Then right-click on the desktop and select Properties. You will see the new screensavers and wallpaper in the file lists under the Background and Screen Saver tabs.

How do I install toolbar wallpaper?

Many Windows users are unaware that they can add custom graphics to their Internet Explorer and Outlook Express 5.X toolbars. To be able to do this, you need to download a free Microsoft product update (170K) from Microsoft Internet Explorer Web Accessories. When installed, this will create a new folder ("Bitmaps") in C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer.

Once you have unzipped the toolbar files you have downloaded, move the decompressed files into the Bitmaps folder. Then open Internet Explorer and choose Toolbar Wallpaper from the Tools menu. Choose your wallpaper. Close IE and then re-open. Voilą!

How do I use icons?

You can store icon files anywhere on your PC, although it is recommended that you move them from the Temp folder into another folder for permanent storage.

To use icons for desktop shortcuts, right-click on the shortcut and choose Properties, select the Shortcut tab and click the Change Icon button at the bottom. Then click the Browse button and navigate to where you stored them to make your choice.

To change system icons, right-click on the desktop and choose Properties, select the Effects tab, pick the icon to change and click the Change Icon button. Then click the Browse button and navigate to where you stored them to make your choice.

You may delete the original .zip file(s) when you are all done.

How do I use cursors?

You can store cursor files anywhere on your PC, although it is recommended that you move them from the Temp folder into another folder for permanent storage.

The specific method to change cursors will vary according to your operating system, the options installed and the pointing device you are using. For most typical systems, go to the Control Panel and open the Mouse dialog box.
